From Darkness to Light: My Journey of Self-Discovery

From Darkness to Light: My Journey of Self-Discovery by Julia Meryl:

Growing up, I always felt different. As a child, I struggled to understand why I didn't fit in with my peers or why simple tasks seemed so challenging. It wasn't until much later in life that I discovered I was on the autism spectrum, which explained many of the difficulties I faced throughout my formative years.

Preschool was a time of joy and authenticity for me. I felt connected to other children and could truly be myself. However, this blissful period was short-lived.

Kindergarten marked the beginning of my struggles with school. I experienced what I now know were autistic meltdowns, which were often misunderstood and harshly punished. It was during this time that I first noticed how different I was from other children, particularly in my aversion to physical touch and tickling.

As I progressed through elementary school, my difficulties intensified. I grappled with reading comprehension, though my reading skills were adequate. Unfortunately, my struggles were often dismissed as laziness or a lack of effort.

Second grade was particularly dark for me. I experienced the first of many  hospitalizations in psychiatric facilities due to my many attempts to take my own life. These feelings of depression and worthlessness became a recurring theme throughout my childhood.

The transition to middle school brought new challenges. The larger, more crowded environment was overwhelming, and I found myself frequently seeking refuge in the nurse's office or with the guidance counselor.

After another hospitalization, I was moved to a smaller middle school with a special education program. While the smaller classes helped, I still struggled with feelings of inadequacy and frustration.

In high school, things began to improve slightly. I made friends, joined Girl Scouts, and engaged in community service. However, I still grappled with understanding social cues and maintaining friendships.

The Path to Understanding…

It wasn't until much later that I received my autism diagnosis, which helped explain many of the challenges I had faced throughout my life. This revelation has been crucial in my journey of self-discovery and acceptance. It has led me down a path to better understanding my needs and getting them met.

Turning Pain into Purpose…

Today, I channel my experiences into my art, creating angels that symbolize hope, resilience, and the beauty that can emerge from struggle. Through my mission-based art business, I aim to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges and to promote understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity.

My journey has been difficult, but it has also been transformative. By sharing my story, I hope to shed light on the experiences of those on the autism spectrum and to encourage others to embrace their unique perspectives and talents.
